India's Suryakumar Yadav was named the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year on Wednesday. The award recognizes his outstanding performance during the 2022 calendar year, in which he scored 1164 runs in 31 matches at an average of 46.56 and a strike-rate of 187.43. He was up against Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan, Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza and England's Sam Curran for the award.
The ICC cited his impressive record of hitting 68 sixes during the year, the most recorded by anyone in a year in the format's history. He was also a key batter for his team, hitting two hundreds and nine half-centuries. His performance during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia was particularly noteworthy, where he recorded three fifties in six innings and averaged nearly 60. He also reached a career-high 890 rating points and became the top-ranked ICC Men's T20I Player.
Australia's Tahlia McGrath was named the ICC Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year, after scoring 435 runs in 16 matches at an average of 62.14 and claiming 13 wickets. She beat out competition from India's Smriti Mandhana, Pakistan's Nida Dar, and New Zealand's Sophie Devine.
The winners of the ICC Awards are determined by the ICC Voting Academy, which includes a selection of global cricket journalists and broadcasters, as well as cricket fans who contribute to the vote via the ICC's digital channels. The performance period for the awards was January 1st to December 31st, 2022.
